So my first day in Barcelona turned out to be a pretty interesting one! Not only did I find out that Tim Hortons is Canada’s favourite coffee ( I still refuse to believe it Terry) but when I went to buy a ticket for the Hop on Hop off bus I was told they were on strike for today, not just the bus tours but the whole city!It seems that the Catalonia, the province where Barcelona is located tried to separate from Spain in 2017 and 12 of the leaders of the movement (deemed unconstitutional by the government) were put in jail and were being tried in court in Madrid today.

Over 200,000 protesters flooded the streets of Barcelona today in support of those leaders, and I was there in the middle of much of the excitement. If there was any violence, I didn’t see it. I saw lots of marching and flags and heard shouted slogans (that I didn’t understand of course)

I didn’t stay long in the city centre but made my way back to my BnB and it was a good thing that I had already decided to walk because the crowds had stopped all traffic including the buses 😁

I’ll try again tomorrow for the tour bus and I’m sure I’ll have much better luck.
Talk about timing Eh?
